GURUGRAM: In response to growing concerns over unscheduled power cuts affecting industrial operations, the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) is preparing to extend its Smart Grid project to include Manesar and Badshahpur. This initiative aims to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity supply in these key industrial regions.
Project Expansion Plans
VK Aggarwal, chief engineer of the Smart Grid project, stated, “Estimates are being prepared to expand the Smart Grid project in areas around Badshahpur and Manesar where many industrial units are based. We will seek approval from the state and central government. Based on how much funds are available, new electricity infrastructure will be set up in these areas along the lines of Gurugram city.”
The Smart Grid project, initially launched in July 2018, has significantly improved power management in Sectors 1-57 of Gurugram. Key enhancements include the installation of smart meters, the undergrounding of 11 Kv power lines, and transformer upgrades. Currently, approximately 80% of Gurugram benefits from the Smart Grid, leading to a reduction in unscheduled power cuts, load shedding, and routine electricity faults.
Impact on Industrial Areas
The decision to extend the Smart Grid to Manesar and Badshahpur comes after persistent appeals from industrialists in these regions. Sumit Rao, general secretary of the Gurgaon Industrial Association (GIA), highlighted the challenges faced by industries due to unreliable power supply. “Power cuts are rampant and this has negatively impacted production in industrial units. Since we are also not allowed to use diesel gensets, this is an existential dilemma for us,” he said.
Future Developments
Aggarwal confirmed that the remaining parts of Gurugram will soon be included in the Smart Grid project. “One of the contractors did not finish the job due to which DHBVN cancelled the contract. We will get the work completed at the earliest,” he assured.
Additionally, the tender for setting up the high-tech Scada (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system to manage electricity distribution and supply is expected to be allotted soon. “Three companies have been found eligible for this project,” Aggarwal mentioned, signaling progress towards a more robust and efficient power management system.
Conclusion
The expansion of the Smart Grid project to Manesar and Badshahpur represents a significant step towards resolving the power supply issues plaguing these industrial hubs. By implementing advanced technologies and infrastructure improvements, DHBVN aims to provide a stable and reliable power supply, thereby supporting industrial growth and productivity in the region.
