Punjabi Bagh Flyover Nears Completion, To Open Next Month
The Punjabi Bagh Flyover, a significant part of the West Delhi Integrated Transit Corridor Development, is set to be completed and open for public use next month. The flyover, spanning 1.1 kilometers and featuring six lanes with a width of 23 meters, is designed to accommodate three parallel vehicles on each side. Currently, 90% of the construction work is completed, with only five slabs remaining to be laid. Each slab takes approximately one week to install, suggesting that the project will be finalized by the end of August.
Alleviating Traffic Congestion
The flyover is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in West Delhi, particularly on Club Road in Punjabi Bagh. Once operational, it will create a signal-free stretch of approximately 18 kilometers from Dhaula Kuan to Azadpur. This stretch already includes Naraina, Mayapuri, Raja Garden, Moti Nagar, Chaudhary Brahm Singh, and Shalimar Bagh flyovers. The addition of the Punjabi Bagh Flyover will ensure a smoother, uninterrupted journey for commuters, saving both fuel and time.
Economic and Environmental Impact
According to the Public Works Department (PWD) officials, the estimated cost of constructing the Punjabi Bagh Flyover is ₹352.32 crores. As of October 2023, ₹174.31 crores had been spent on the project. The Delhi government’s economic survey projected that over 1.25 million vehicles would use the flyover daily, resulting in an annual fuel savings of more than 600,000 liters.
Challenges and Delays
Initially, the construction was slated for completion by December 2023. However, unforeseen obstacles, including high-tension power cables, water pipelines, and over 30 trees, delayed progress. While the issues with power cables and pipelines have been resolved, permission to remove the trees has yet to be obtained. Despite this, officials assure that the trees are not a hindrance to the flyover’s opening but may impact road repairs beneath it.
Upcoming Developments
This flyover is part of the second phase of the Delhi Integrated Transit Corridor Development. The first phase saw the inauguration of the Moti Nagar Flyover by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 13. The successful implementation of these projects highlights Delhi’s ongoing efforts to improve urban infrastructure and reduce traffic woes.
