Gurgaon, 10 July 2024 – The Haryana state government is set to enhance healthcare services by introducing intensive care unit (ICU) facilities in all district civil hospitals in a phased manner. In the first phase, six hospitals in Gurgaon, Rohtak, Panipat, Ambala City, Ambala Cantonment, and Karnal will have ICUs operational by July 31.

The plan will proceed with six to eight more districts being incorporated in the second phase, and the remaining districts in the third phase. This initiative aims to ensure that critical patients no longer need referrals to medical colleges or other institutions in Delhi or Rohtak PGIMS for ICU treatment.

To guarantee the smooth implementation of the project, the Director General of Health Services in Haryana has instructed civil surgeons in Gurgaon and Panchkula to oversee the completion of the ICU installations. Gurgaon surgeons will monitor the Sector 10 hospital, as well as hospitals in Rohtak and Panipat. Panchkula civil surgeons will supervise the work at hospitals in Karnal, Ambala City, and Ambala Cantonment.

“Currently, we have an adequate number of ventilators, non-invasive ventilators, and BiPap machines at the Sector 10 hospital. We plan to start dialysis services for patients in the same setup in the future. We also visited the Rohtak hospital today to initiate the plan,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Virender Yadav. The Sector 10 hospital, which became operational last November, boasts a 14-bed intensive care unit comprising a six-bed intensive care ward and an eight-bed high dependency unit. It is managed by a team of five anesthetists, one pulmonologist, and two physicians.

Since the demolition of the Civil Lines hospital three years ago, the Sector 10 hospital has been accommodating over 2,000 patients daily in its outpatient department (OPD). Officials noted that the hospital is also working on strengthening critical care services, emergency departments, labor rooms, newborn stabilization units, and operation theaters at all sub-divisional hospitals and first referral units.

This significant upgrade in healthcare infrastructure is expected to vastly improve the quality of medical care available to the residents of Haryana, ensuring timely and efficient treatment for critically ill patients within the state.
