Gurgaon – In a bid to enhance safety and security for women, Gurgaon Police has written to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) requesting the installation of CCTV cameras at key locations identified as hotspots for crimes against women. The decision follows a comprehensive survey listing areas with high incidences of harassment, molestation, and stalking.
Identified Hotspots
The identified hotspots include Vatika Chowk in Sector 49, Govt Girls’ College in Sector 52, and Sikanderpur metro station. Other areas flagged as high-risk include the vicinity of MG Road metro station, IFFCO Chowk metro station, sectors 22, 29, 48, IMT Manesar crossing in Manesar, and Devilal Park in Old Gurgaon.
The survey, based on the number of FIRs and complaints related to crimes against women, has led to this proactive approach by the police to curb such incidents. Continuous monitoring through CCTV surveillance is expected to significantly aid in the identification and tracking of criminals and anti-social elements.
Deployment and Additional Measures
In addition to CCTV surveillance, female constables have been deployed at these hotspots to provide immediate assistance to women in distress. A mobile application launched last year allows women to quickly reach out to the police in emergencies, further enhancing safety measures.
Impact and Community Response
The presence of CCTV cameras is anticipated to act as a deterrent to potential offenders, knowing that their actions are being recorded and can be used as evidence in court. Virender Vij, DCP (traffic and crime against women), emphasized the importance of these measures, noting that unique identification numbers are now mandatory for all autorickshaws in the city. These serial numbers and the drivers’ pictures must be registered with the regional transport authority (RTA).
With nearly 850 women police personnel deployed at major locations, including the identified hotspots, the city is taking significant steps to ensure women’s safety. The CCTV footage will not only aid in real-time monitoring but also help analyze crime patterns and identify areas requiring additional security measures.
Community and Expert Opinions
Residents have welcomed the initiative. Sudha Sharma, a member of a women’s NGO, praised the continuous monitoring and tracking of criminals, stating that it would create a safer environment for women. “The presence of CCTV cameras will go a long way in deterring potential offenders and ensuring that women feel safe in these areas,” she added.
Conclusion
The installation of CCTV cameras at identified hotspots is a crucial step towards enhancing women’s safety in Gurgaon. With these measures, the police aim to create a secure environment where women can move freely without fear. Continuous efforts and community cooperation are essential to the success of these initiatives.
