Gurgaon, August 13, 2024 — In a remarkable medical achievement, a 44-year-old woman from Bihar successfully gave birth to a healthy child after undergoing a pioneering robotic surgery at CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon. The surgery, believed to be the first of its kind in India, was used to treat a rare and life-threatening condition known as scar ectopic pregnancy.

The patient, who had endured nine years of heartbreak trying to conceive and had previously lost a baby to spina bifida, faced an uphill battle. Her medical history included unsuccessful natural pregnancies and a devastating ectopic pregnancy in 2023, which occurred at the site of a scar from a 2014 caesarean section. The condition, known as scar ectopic pregnancy, is exceptionally rare, occurring in only 1% of all ectopic pregnancies and affecting approximately 1 in 1,500 to 2,000 pregnancies.

A Leap of Faith with Robotic-Assisted Surgery

In June 2023, the woman, determined to have a child of her own, sought the expertise of Dr. Aruna Kalra, director of obstetrics and gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital. After reviewing her complex medical history and understanding the risks involved, Dr. Kalra and her team decided to employ a robotic-assisted surgical approach to repair the scar tissue.

“Scar ectopic pregnancies are extremely dangerous and can lead to severe complications, including uterine rupture and haemorrhage,” explained Dr. Kalra. “Given the patient’s history and the high risk of another ectopic pregnancy, we opted for robotic surgery, which allowed us to precisely suture the scar from her previous caesarean section.”

The minimally invasive procedure, conducted in August 2023, was a success. The surgery was performed with no blood loss, tissue injury, or complications, and the patient was discharged the same day. Thanks to the precision of the robotic suturing, the patient was able to attempt another pregnancy just three months later.

A Miracle Baby After Years of Heartache

In November 2023, the patient chose to proceed with in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) once again. This time, the outcome was nothing short of miraculous. She successfully carried the pregnancy to term and, in July 2024, delivered a healthy baby girl via caesarean section.

“This was an exceptionally rare case of scar pregnancy,” said Dr. Kalra. “The success of this procedure highlights the importance of advanced surgical techniques and personalized care in high-risk pregnancies. The patient’s determination, combined with cutting-edge medical technology, allowed us to achieve this incredible outcome.”

Dr. Kalra also noted that while scar ectopic pregnancies are rare, their incidence is on the rise due to the increasing number of caesarean sections being performed. She emphasized the need for greater awareness and timely intervention in such cases to prevent life-threatening complications.

The birth of this healthy baby girl marks a significant milestone in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology, offering hope to countless women facing similar challenges.
