Heavy Rains in Uttarakhand Close Badrinath Highway, Red Alert in 17 States
Heavy rains in Uttarakhand have led to the closure of the Badrinath National Highway. A severe landslide near the mouth of the Patalganga Langsi tunnel in Chamoli district has blocked the route. The Chamoli police shared a video of the landslide on their social media handle, showing a torrent of debris falling from the mountain. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but traffic on at least 200 other roads in various parts of the state has been disrupted.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for the next three to four days across 17 states. A red alert has been issued for Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Meghalaya due to extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has been issued for eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Goa. Additionally, heavy rain is expected in central Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka from July 12-14.
28 Roads Blocked in Himachal Pradesh, Weather Department Alert
Light rain in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Kinnaur, and Kullu districts has led to the closure of 28 roads. The highest number of closures are in Mandi with eight roads and Shimla with six. The state is also experiencing disruptions in power supply with 32 transformers and 16 water supply projects being affected. A yellow alert has been issued for Shimla on Thursday and Friday, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
Konkan Railway Route Halted as Water Fills Tunnel in Goa
In Goa, the Konkan Railway route has been halted due to water filling a tunnel. This has resulted in the cancellation and rerouting of multiple trains. Passengers on the Konkan Railway are facing significant inconvenience due to the heavy rains.
Heavy Rainfall from Gujarat to Assam
According to the IMD, in the 24 hours until Wednesday morning, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at various locations across eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat region, Kutch and Saurashtra, Goa, Konkan and central Maharashtra, Telangana, Assam, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Rajasthan’s Dungarpur, Banswara, and Rajsamand districts recorded heavy rain, with moderate rain in other parts of the state. Banswara’s Bagidora recorded the highest rainfall at 80 mm.
84 Deaths in Assam Floods
The flood situation in Assam has shown some improvement, but over 1.7 million people in 26 districts remain affected. Large areas of crops are submerged. The floods have resulted in 84 deaths so far. Additionally, 13 people have died due to landslides and storms. In Kaziranga National Park, nine rhinos and a total of 159 wild animals have died due to the floods.
